Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has heaped praise on the Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina who is currently on a state visit to the Maldives.

Speaking before inviting the Prime Minister to deliver her address at the parliament today, Nasheed noted that the Prime Minister's record speaks for its self and that under her leadership Bangladesh is booming.

Nasheed said that Bangladesh is rapidly becoming one of South Asia's fastest-growing, important, and most dynamic economies.

He also said that Bangladesh has also enjoyed unprecedented political stability, peace, and harmony.

Nasheed noted that not only is Bangladesh becoming an important economic power but it is also punching above its weight on the world stage. He recounted how he witnessed the Bangladeshi delegation's hard work at the COP26 summit held earlier this year in Glasgow Scotland.

The Bangladeshi delegation headed by the prime minister relentlessly fought for the rights of climate-vulnerable countries including the Maldives. With determination, Bangladesh fought to ensure that global temperatures do not pass 1.5 degrees of warming which spell doom for all of us. And that the international community delivers the funds we need to adapt to climate change and transition to a clean future. Indeed the BBC reported that of the world leaders that attended the climate summit, five stood out as the most important dealmakers this included the prime minister.

In his remarks, Nasheed took the opportunity to thank the invaluable contribution the Bangladeshi community makes here in the Maldives.

Nasheed said that our Bangladeshi cousins underpin our economy, our prosperity, our way of life. He said that without their invaluable contribution to our labor market, the Maldives would not have enjoyed the standard of living it does today.

He added that this is an important fact that as a nation the country should better appreciate.
