Male' City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has called on Male' Water and Sewerage Company to hand over the stormwater pumps to Male' City Council amid flooding in the capital Male' due to heavy rain.

Heavy rains in Male' have flooded major roads in the capital city, causing problems for both vehicles and pedestrians alike.

In a curtly worded tweet, Mayor Muizzu called on MWSC to hand over the stormwater pumps at several locations in Male' if the company cannot maintain and operate the pumps.

He also said that experts have informed the Council that stormwater is not draining to the level it's designed for because of poor handling of the pumps.

Meanwhile, MWSC Managing Director Hassan Shahu said to "The Press" that the stormwater pumps are functional and working round the clock.

He conceded that the pumps are not working most efficiently because of their size and that they are too small for the task of draining stormwater from the island.

Shah said that he has raised the issue with the Housing Ministry.

Flooding in the capital city is a decade-old problem with different administrations failing to rectify the issue completely.
