The Male' City Council has revoked the Hulhumale Registry that gives Housing Development Corporation HDC control over Phase I and Phase II of the artificial island.

City Council had said deputy mayor Ahmed Nareesh had submitted the motion to revoke the Hulhumale registry and that the registry was canceled anonymously at its 30th general meeting.

It added that 12 councilors had taken part in the meeting and that those who voted for the cancellation include councilors who represent the main ruling party MDP as well.

With the cancellation, Hulhumale would now fall under the jurisdiction of the City Council.

The decision from the opposition-ruled council came as HDC expressed concerns about a political gathering the opposition coalition has scheduled at Phase II of Hulhumale for next Friday.

HDC had said that such gathering can be held in Hulhumale' under strict guidelines with the permission of the corporation but the rally being organized by the opposition does not follow the set guidelines.

The city council had given permission to the opposition to hold its rally in Phase II, touted to be the first political event to be held in the newly inhabited area of Hulhumale'.
