Health Protection Agency HPA has confirmed 169 new cases of COVID-19 in the country on Monday as the number of new cases increase in the last few days.

HPA said in its latest COVID update that 119 of the new cases were reported from the inhabited islands across the country while 49 new cases were confirmed from the Greater Male' Area. The Agency also reported 1 new case from operational resorts across the country.

This has taken the total number of cases to 80,960 in the Maldives since March 2020.

HPA had said that 79,012 people have recovered from the illness and that the active cases of COVID-19 in the country have now reached 1,709.

The Agency added that the number of COVID-19 patients currently hospitalized for further treatment has now increased to 17.

The global pandemic has claimed 226 lives here in the Maldives and this mostly includes elderly locals with underlying health issues.

But few young people have also succumbed to the illness in the country including a 10-year-old girl earlier this year.

HPA had said that total cases include 13 positives whose cause of death is not directly due to COVID-19.
