MP for Makunudhoo Constituency Mohamed Raee has submitted a motion to the parliament about the Panama Cargo Ship that ran aground off Kaafu Rasfari reef on the 19th of this month.
The Rasfaree reef is an environmentally protected site and the Mega Cargo ship ran aground the area after its engines were switched off because of a technical problem.
The motion by MP Raee said that the ship's captain had failed to inform authorities of the accident and that the incident should be further investigated to determine the amount of negligence.
It also said that the damages to the marine site should also be investigated and documented.
Transport Authority had said that so far it did not appear if the accident had forced a harmful spill into the ocean.
It also said that authorities had managed to transfer the low sulfur IFO stored on the lower tanks of the ship to the upper tanks as planned and that officials would begin the investigation into the accident once the ship is anchored at the port limited area.
Authorities in the Maldives had yesterday refloated the mega-ship and had said that the Environmental Protection Agency EPA and the Coastguard will assess the damages to the protected marine site soon.
EPA had said before that if the ship wishes to leave Maldivian waters before a damage assessment, then its owners must pay a fine of MVR 100 million.
