The government of the Maldives has signed a contract with India's Afcon Insfrasture to build the Thilafushi- Male' bridge under the Greater Male’ Connectivity – Male’ to Thilafushi Link Project.
The contract was signed today at a ceremony held at Hotel Jen in the presence of several cabinet Ministers, and the Indian High Commissioner to the Maldives.
Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer and the High Commissioner of India to Maldives Sunjay Sudhir expressed a few words regarding the project during the ceremony.
In his speech, Minister Ameer said that Greater Male’ Connectivity Project, funded through Indian EXIM will transform the Greater Male’ region and the Maldivian economy.
He also said that it would address challenges in connectivity between Male’, Villingili, Gulhifalhu, and Thilafushi.
Minister Ameeru noted that the Project will increase the potential of commercial ports to be established in Gulhifalhu. He added that the bridge will also ease the congestion of the Male’ area.
Greater Male’ Connectivity –Male’ to Thilafushi Link Project is a 6.7km sea crossing link from the south-west corner of Male’, running adjacent to the south shore of Villingili, then along the southern periphery of reclaimed land on Gulhifalhu, and terminating on land at Thilafushi
The project scope includes the construction of three navigation bridges, viaducts, and on-grade roads. The project is funded through a 400 million dollar line of credit from Indian EXIM Bank and by a 100 million dollar grant from the government of India.
