Health Protection Agency HPA has reported 151 new cases of COVID-19 in the country on Tuesday as the number of new cases edges higher in the last few days.

HPA said in its update that 42 of the new cases were reported from the Greater Male' Area while 94 new cases were confirmed from the inhabited islands. The Agency also reported 4 new cases from operational resorts and 7 from safaris.

This has taken the total number of cases to 80,218 in the Maldives since March 2020.

HPA had said that 78,294 people have recovered from the illness and that 1,687 remained as active cases of the pandemic. The Agency added that 15 COVID patients remained hospitalized for further treatment.

The global pandemic has claimed 255 lives here in the Maldives and this mostly includes elderly locals with underlying health issues. But few young people have also succumbed to the illness in the country including a 10-year-old girl earlier this year.

HPA had said that total cases include 12 positives whose cause of death is not directly due to COVID-19.
