Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has called on the Health Protection Agency HPA to strengthen the measures taken against the COVID-19 pandemic.

He made the call in a tweet.

Maumoon said that neighboring Sri Lanka has now gone under lockdown following an increase in COVID cases and would remain under lockdown till the 30th of this month.

He said that the Maldives should strengthen its measures against the pandemic.

His comments came as the country enjoys a respite from the illness that had brought the country to its knees a couple of months back.

Yesterday, HPA had reported only 95 cases across the Maldives with 24 new cases from the Greater Male' Area. HPA had also confirmed 62 new cases from inhabited islands and 9 cases from operational resorts in the country.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in the country has now reached 79,754 since March 2020.

While 77,770 people have recovered from the illness in the country, 1,750 remain active cases of the pandemic with 16 currently hospitalized for further treatment.

The global pandemic has killed 222 people in the Maldives since April 2020.
