Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has requested for a leave extension citing lingering concerns regarding his safety with authorities unable to find those behind the attack against his person earlier this year.

The speaker conveyed his wish to extend his leave in a letter addressed to the Vice Speaker of the Parliament Eva Abdullah, which was read out loud today at the first session of the 3rd sitting of 2021.

Nasheed began the letter by stating that he did not write the letter because he had any grievances with the government agencies but felt that it was required given the situation and circumstances.

Nasheed said that the investigation into the attack against his person was still ongoing and that he himself, along with his family and well-wishers feel hesitant about the prospect of Nasheed returning to the country before the perpetrators of the crime are brought in front of justice.

He went on to request for an extension of his leave and said that he was fully confident that in his absence the members of the Parliament would act within the laws governing the parliament and the Consitution and under the leadership of Vice Speaker MP Eva.

Nasheed is currently in the UK recuperating after sustaining near-fatal injuries in the 6th May attack in which an IED strapped to a motorcycle was detonated outside his house.
