Health Protection Agency HPA has confirmed another 111 new cases of COVID-19 in the Maldives as the total number of pandemic cases nears 79,000 in the island nation.

HPA said last night that out of the 111 new cases confirmed yesterday, 24 were from the Greater Male' Area where authorities now believe the infection is largely under control.

HPA also reported 79 new cases of COVID-19 from the islands on Friday and reported another 8 cases from the operational resorts across the country.

The Agency confirmed that a total of 78,926 people have now tested positive for COVID-19 in the Maldives since March 2020 and that 76,732 people have since recovered from the illness.

HPA said that there are 1,960 active cases of the pandemic in the country right now and that 19 remained hospitalized for further treatment.

The COVID-19 global pandemic has killed 222 people in the Maldives since April 2020. Most of those who succumbed to the illness in the country are elderly locals with underlying health conditions.

Although, many younger individuals have also passed away due to the fast-spreading pandemic including a 10-year-old girl.
