Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer says the biggest hurdle for the country's recovering economy is the fear of another surge in COVID cases as the country looks to bounce back from the latest wave of the pandemic.

The Minister said via Twitter that in order to avert such a future where the positivity rate increases, it is vital that as many people get vaccinated against the illness.

Ameer said that this would ensure that the country's economy is able to stabilize within the current ease in restrictions granted by the government amid the current drop in COVID cases.

He urged all to get vaccinated against the pandemic as soon as possible.

Health Protection Agency HPA had said yesterday that the number of fully vaccinated individuals in the country has now reached 206,245.

HPA had also said that 317,762 people have received one dose of the vaccine in the Maldives as the country looks to innoculate as many people as possible.

Yesterday, public health officials had announced ease of travel to those who had been fully vaccinated against the illness and had said that such individuals can travel to islands that are not under monitoring without having to quarantine. HPA added such individuals can only be granted quarantine-less travel 2 weeks after receiving their second dose of the vaccine.
