Health Protection Agency HPA has confirmed another 139 new cases of COVID-19 in the Maldives on Wednesday.

HPA said that the new cases include 26 new cases from the Greater Male' Area, 80 new cases from the inhabited islands, 8 new cases from operational resorts, 22 new cases from industrial islands, and two cases from safaris.

Wednesday's new cases take the total number of COVID-19 cases reported in the island nation to a staggering 74, 724 since March 2020.

HPA confirmed that the number of active cases has now dropped to 2,932 with 71,567 recoveries.

The Agency added that 22 people remained hospitalized for further treatment.

The global pandemic has killed 213 people in the Maldives and the last surge of the infection saw more than a hundred die in two months.

Yesterday, authorities had announced additional ease to restrictions amid the drop in new cases reported across the country. This includes repealing the curfew that was in place in the Greater Male' Area since 12, May.

Authorities had also announced that fully vaccinated adults can now travel to islands that are not under monitoring without having to quarantine. They also said that children who are currently ineligible for the COVID vaccine can also travel without having to quarantine but must produce a negative PCR test before traveling.
