Male' City Council has elected council member Ahmed Nareesh as the Deputy Mayor of Male' City.

Nareesh represents Maafannu medhu constituency on the council.

The PPM councilman was elected as deputy mayor after council members took a vote to fill the designation today. He competed against MDP Council member Ahmed Zameer who represents Mahchangoalhi dhekunu constituency on the council.

The City Council said that all 19 council members had taken part in the vote to decide the deputy mayor and that 12 members had backed Nareesh as Deputy Mayor.

It also said that Zameer had received votes from 7 council members.

This comes after PPM had said that it had decided to endorse Nareesh as the Deputy Mayor with the opposition controlling 13 seats on the Male' City Council.

Councilor for Hulhumale Ibrahim Shujau and Councillor for Villimale Nahula Ali had also vied for the coveted Deputy Mayor title after securing their seats for PPM in the last council elections.
