Health Protection Agency HPA says an 84-year-old local woman had succumbed to the COVID-19 pandemic in the Maldives today.

The Agency said via Twitter that the woman under treatment at Hulhumale Medical Facility, a dedicated facility to fight COVID-19, had passed away at 09:55 am today.

HPA had said that this is the 193rd COVID-19 death in the country since April 2020.

The woman's death takes the monthly death toll for June to 32. Most of the deaths have come from the Hulhumale Medical Facility and most of those who died are locals.

Last month is still the month with record COVID fatalities with 88 COVID-19 deaths reported in the worst pandemic surges the country had yet experienced.

The COVID numbers have been declining steadily in the past few weeks with HPA confirmed 295 COVID-19 cases in the country last night.

A total of 69,831 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in the Maldives since the pandemic hit its shores last year.

Health Protection Agency HPA had said that 55,559 people have since recovered from the illness and that 13,071 remain as active cases of the pandemic in the Maldives.
