Health Protection Agency HPA has confirmed that 157 people have now died from the COVID-19 pandemic in the Maldives since April 2020.

The Agency had so far confirmed two COVID-19 deaths today with the latest coming from Dharumavantha Hospital 11th floor, DH11.

HPA said via Twitter that earlier this morning at 05:35 am an 86-year-old Maldivian man admitted at DH11 has passed away. HPA reported that this is the 157 COVID-19 death reported in the country and the 84th person to die from the illness in the Maldives this month.

Prior to May, 73 people had been killed in the pandemic since April of last year.

Meanwhile, HPA had confirmed an additional 901 new cases of COVID-19 in the country on Friday.

HPA said that 468 new cases came from the Greater Male' Area while 417 new cases were confirmed from inhabited islands. HPA also confirmed 11 cases from operational resorts, 4 from islands under development, and 1 from industrial islands.

This takes the total number of cases reported in the country to 61,884 with 24,818 active cases in the Maldives right now.

The pandemic situation remains precarious in the country as authorities take additional measures to deter the spread of the illness. Right now more than 70 islands remain under monitoring because of the pandemic across the country.
