Health Protection Agency HPA has confirmed the death of an elderly local man who was fighting the COVID-19 illness.
HPA said via Twitter that last night at 11:38 pm an 84-year-old Maldivian male admitted at HMF has passed away.
This was the 5th death the agency had confirmed yesterday and had taken the country's pandemic death toll to 156.
This month has seen the highest COVID deaths in the country since the pandemic reached its shores last year with 83 people dying from the illness in May.
Prior to May, 73 people have died from the COVID-19 pandemic in the Maldives.
The pandemic situation remains serious in the Maldives with the Greater Male' Area effectively under lockdown to control the spread of the virus.
Authorities have closed down schools, offices, and even mosques in the capital city in a desperate bid to deter the rampant infection and have also imposed a curfew in the area and all the islands currently under monitoring due to the pandemic.
The curfew in the Greater Male Area was extended from 04:00 pm to 08:00 am last week with residents banned from going outside with a permit even during non curfew hours.
