Chairperson of Maldives Technical Advisory Group on Immunization Dr. Ahmed Faisal says while the number of pandemic deaths has increased over the last couple of days, most of those who succumb to the illness are people who have not been vaccinated against the disease.

Speaking at the latest press conference by Health Emergency Operations Center HEOC, Dr. Faisal said that most of those who are dying from the disease are elderly individuals and most of them were not vaccinated against the pandemic.

Dr. Faisal said that it is very unfortunate that such individuals belonging to a high-risk group had not received their inoculations while three different vaccines had been available in the Maldives.

He added that authorities had prioritized elderly individuals when they began the COVID vaccination drive because they remain most at risk to the illness.

Dr. Faisal also said that it is important to make sure that those who take care of the elderly and their children are vaccinated.

He noted that appropriate arrangements should be made to make sure that these individuals get their vaccines and that they can be taken to the vaccination centers or mobile units can visit bedridden individuals to give them their shots.

A total of 103 individuals have succumbed to the COVID-19 illness in the Maldives since April 2020 including 31 who died this month alone.
