Health Protection Agency HPA has reported 734 new cases of COVID-19 in the country on Wednesday as the pandemic situation in the country turns dire.

This is the fourth straight day HPA had been posting record-breaking COVID-19 daily figures for the country.

HPA said last night that out of the 734 new cases reported yesterday, 540 were confirmed from the Greater Male' Area. HPA also said that 186 new cases were reported from inhabited islands while 7 cases were confirmed from operational resorts and another case from an industrial island.

The dramatic surge in cases has taken the total number of COVID-19 cases reported in the country to an eye-watering 32,665.

HPA said that the rise in daily cases has now prompted a sudden increase in active cases of the pandemic in the country and that it had now reached 7,109.

The Agency also said that close to 200 people with COVID-19 are now hospitalized for further treatment and had warned that the country's precarious healthcare system could be overwhelmed at any time.

The global pandemic has killed 74 people in the country including 65 locals and 9 foreigners.

Authorities in the Maldives have tightened their measures against the pandemic in the last few days including imposing an 8-hour curfew in the Greater Male' Area where the infection is now believed to be extremely rampant.
