Health Protection Agency HPA has reported another 601 new cases of COVID-19 in the country as the pandemic threatens to overwhelm the already-wobbling health sector in the country.
This is the 3rd straight day HPA posted a record-breaking COVID number amid a dramatic spike in new cases across the country.
HPA said on Tuesday that out of the 601 new cases, a staggering 440 cases were confirmed from the Greater Male' Area and that another 141 new cases were reported from the inhabited islands.
The Agency said that a further 19 cases were recorded from operational resorts in the country.
With more than 1600 new cases reported in the last three days, the total number of cases confirmed from the country has now skyrocketed to 31,931.
HPA reported that there are 6,508 active cases of the pandemic in the country and that the number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients has now jumped to 181.
The global pandemic has killed 74 people in the country since April 2020 and this includes 65 locals and 9 foreigners.
The recent surge of cases has prompted the HPA to tightened its measures against the pandemic.
This includes closing down schools and government offices while also implementing a vehicle ban from 12:00 pm to 04:00 am in the Greater Male' Area starting today.
HPA had also rescinded its travel eases due to the spike and had said non-essential travel between islands is now banned for the next 10 days.
