Health Protection Agency HPA has reported more than 800 new cases of COVID-19 in the Maldives over the weekend as the surge of daily cases continues in the island nation.

The Agency had 465 new cases of COVID-19 in the country on Friday including 193 cases from the Greater Male' Area. It had said that another 242 cases were confirmed from the islands while 5 cases were reported from Safaris.

Meanwhile, HPA had further confirmed another 402 new cases of the pandemic in the Maldives on Saturday as the total number of cases passed 30,000.

HPA said yesterday that 174 cases were confirmed in the Greater Male Area and that another 179 cases were reported from inhabited islands across the country.

In a further breakdown, HPA noted that the 179 cases from the islands include 47 cases from Lhaviyani Naifaru, 25 cases from Alifu Alifu Mathiveri, and 20 new cases from Alifu Alifu Ukulas.

The Agency also reported 6 new cases from operational resorts and 43 cases from industrial islands and islands used for other purposes. It had said that this includes 19 new cases from Kaafu Gulheefalhu and another 24 cases from Kaafu Thilafushi.

The recent spike in positive cases has taken the total number of cases reported in the Maldives to 30,237.

Alarmingly, the number of active cases of the pandemic in the country has now risen to 5,221 with 161 COVID-19 patients now hospitalized for further treatment.

The Authorities had confirmed 73 COVID-19 deaths in the country including 65 locals 8 foreigners.

They had also said that the confirmed cases include 9 deceased positive whose cause of death is not directly due to COVID-19.
