Health Emergency Operations Center HEOC has issued a warning over the recent surge in new COVID-19 cases in the Maldives and urged all to take all precautionary measures amid the reality of a new variant now spreading in the country.
Speaking at the press conference organized by HEOC today, State Minister at the Health Ministry Dr. Shah Mahir Abdullah said that it is now possible that Maldives is now fighting a new variant of the COVID-19 causing virus as the number of COVID cases have rapidly increased over the last few days.
He assured that authorities were trying to confirm the spread of the new variant but urged the country to take all necessary actions to further avoid the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Meanwhile, Dr, Nazla Musthafa from the Technical Advisory Group said at the press conference today that the positivity rate in the Male Area has spiked in recent days.
Dr. Nazla said that the Male' Area flu clinic positivity rate has now reached 14 percent in the last week and that the positivity rate had increased from 7 percent to 10 percent between 21st April to 27th April.
She also urged all to get their COVID-19 vaccine doses as soon as they can before their vaccine deadlines are met.
On Wednesday, HPA reported a record 464 new cases of COVID-19 in the country including more than 200 new cases in the Greater Male Area alone.
This has taken the total number of cases beyond 29,000 in the island nation.
