Health Protection Agency HPA has confirmed a daily record of 464 new cases of COVID-19 in the Maldives as fear of another COVID wave mount across the country.

The Agency reported that 207 new cases were reported from the Greater Male' Area while 146 new cases were confirmed from inhabited islands.

HPA also said that 14 cases were confirmed from operational resorts while 93 cases were reported from industrial islands and islands used for other purposes. It added that 3 more cases were confirmed from Safaris and that 1 case was reported from an island under development.

With the sudden spike in daily cases, the total number of COVID-19 cases reported in the island nation has now risen to 29,052.

HPA said that there are 4,396 active cases of the pandemic in the country right now and that the number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients has now risen to 122.

The Agency confirmed that 24,575 people have recovered from the fast-spreading illness.

The global pandemic has now claimed the lives of 73 people in the Maldives since April 2020 and two of there die earlier today.

HPA had confirmed the death of an 85-year-old local woman and a 50-year-old Indian man today and reported that both had succumbed to the disease while under treatment at DH11.
