The COVID-19 global pandemic has claimed yet another life in the Maldives as the pandemic death toll reaches 72.

Health Protection Agency HPA said that today at 01:13 pm an 85-year-old local woman had passed due to COVID-19.

HPA had confirmed that this has taken the total number of COVID-19 deaths in the Maldives to 72 in over a year.

This includes 65 locals and 7 foreigners.

Most of the locals who have succumbed to the pandemic in the Maldives include elderly individuals with underlying health conditions but some middle-aged individuals have also passed away due to the fast-spreading disease.

Authorities in the Maldives have reported a total of 28,588 cases since March 2020.

Last night, HPA had confirmed a daily record of 386 new cases of COVID-19 in the country including 198 cases from inhabited islands where the disease is now believed to be rampant.

There are 4009 active cases of COVID-19 in the country right with 119 COVID-19 currently hospitalized for further treatment.
