Health Protection Agency HPA confirms another 157 new cases of COVID-19 in the country, taking the total number of reported cases past 26,500.

HPA said in a tweet that the new cases include 71 cases confirmed from the Greater Male' Area, 72 from inhabited islands, 12 from operational resorts, and two more cases from industrial islands.

This takes the total number of cases to 26,505.

HPA also reported that currently there are 2,735 active cases of COVID-19 in the country and that the number of hospitalized COVID patients has now spiked to 68.

The Agency confirmed that 23,691 people have recovered from the illness in the country.

The global pandemic has killed 70 people in the Maldives and this includes 63 locals and 7 foreigners.

Most of the locals who had succumbed to the pandemic include elderly individuals with underlying health conditions but several younger locals have also lost the battle against the fast-spreading illness.

HPA had also reported that the total confirmed cases include 9 deceased positives whose cause of death is not directly due to COVID-19.
