Health Protection Agency HPA has confirmed more than 26,000 cases of COVID-19 as the Maldives looks to ease its restrictions taken against the global pandemic after a year of fighting the fast-spreading infection.
HPA reported last night that 82 more people have tested positive for COVID-19 across the country yesterday and that this includes 40 new cases from the Greater Male' Area where the rampant infection now appears under control.
HPA also confirmed 24 new cases from inhabited islands and another 18 from operational resorts.
The new cases take the total number of COVID-19 cases reported since March 2020 to a staggering 26,021.
HPA had said that 23,360 people have since recovered from the illness and that 2,584 people remained as active cases of COVID-19 in the country. HPA added that 53 COVID-19 patients remained hospitalized for further treatment.
Meanwhile, the Agency had confirmed that the COVID death toll in the Maldives has now reached 69. HPA reported via Twitter that yesterday at 04:00 pm an 86-year-old man was brought to IGMH/ER in an unresponsive state and was declared dead at 04:20 pm.
The man was the second person to succumb to the illness in the Maldives yesterday after an 82-year-old woman fighting the illness lost her battle while under treatment at DH11.
The 69 people who have died from COVID-19 include 62 locals and 7 foreigners.
