Health Protection Agency HPA has today begun administering the second dose of the Covishield vaccine as the government aims to immunize the population against the COVID-19 pandemic in three months time.

HPA had second that it be giving the second dose of the vaccine in the Greater Male' Area alone at the moment. It also said that the 2nd dose of the vaccine would be given to those who had received their 1st doses between the 1st to 4th February.

HPA also said that the 2nd dose of the vaccine would be given in four vaccination centers across the Male' Area, this includes Social Center, National Art Gallery, Villimale' Youth Center, and Hulhumale' Flu Clinic.

HPA kicked off the mass immunization campaign in February and currently is overseeing the administration of two COVID vaccines in the country. This includes Covshield, developed by AstraZeneca and UK's Oxford University, and Sinopharm, a vaccine developed by a Chinese company.

Maldivian authorities have also given the approval to use the US-developed Pfizer vaccine, having secured a shipment of the much-sought vaccine from the COVAX facility.

HPA said last night that a total of 241,127 have now been given the vaccine in the Maldives and that this includes 132,044 from the Greater Male area and 109,083 from the Atolls.
