Health Protection Agency HPA has confirmed 300 new cases of COVID-19 in the country on Thursday. This is a record number of new cases reported in a single day this calendar year.
HPA said via Twitter that the new cases include 94 from the Greater Male' Area, 96 new cases from the Atolls, and 15 cases from operational resorts. HPA also confirmed 95 new cases from industrial or islands used for other purposes.
The record number of cases reported this year takes the total COVID-19 cases reported in the Maldives to a staggering 24,379.
HPA said that the surge in cases has increased the active cases to 3,022 with hospitalized COVID-19 patients now up to 101.
The Agency has confirmed that 21,282 people have now recovered from the illness.
The global pandemic has killed 67 in the Maldives since April last year and this includes 60 locals and 7 foreigners. HPA had also said that confirmed cases include 8 deceased positives whose cause of death is not directly due to COVID-19.
The record number of cases for the year comes at a precarious time for the COVID-19 situation here in the island nation as the pandemic situation in the Atolls seemed to have worsened over the past few days.
Earlier today, HPA had confirmed that 17 islands are currently under monitoring and that all the inhabited islands in Lhaviyani Atoll are currently under monitoring. HPA had on Wednesday implemented strict measures in Atoll Hotspot Naifaru amid a raging outbreak while the agency implemented similar measures in Kaafu Atoll Hura.
As for the greater Male' Area, HPA appears comfortable to let the city return to almost normal with more measures lifted earlier today. This includes the curfew that had been in place in the area as well as other notable measures.
