Health Protection Agency on Saturday has confirmed an additional 166 new cases of COVID-19 in the Maldives as the steady increase of cases continues in the island despite the restrictive measures taken to deter the pandemic.

In its daily update via Twitter, HPA said that the 166 new cases include 91 reported from the Greater Male' Area and 52 reported from inhabited islands across the country.

HPA also said that 11 COVID-19 cases were reported from operational resorts while a further 11 cases reported from safaris and 1 case of COVID-19 was confirmed from an industrial island.

The new cases take the total number of COVID-19 cases reported in the Maldives to 23,403 in the Maldives since March last year.

HPA confirmed that 20,618 people have since recovered from the illness and that 2,712 remained as active COVID-19 cases in the country.

HPA also said that the number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients had now dropped to 98.

The global pandemic has killed 66 individuals in the Maldives and this includes 59 locals and 7 foreigners.

HPA had also said that the confirmed cases include 7 deceased positives whose cause of death is not directly due to COVID-19.
