President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih says his government would investigate the ventilator scam without bias amid growing tensions after the Prosecutor General's Office informed of its decision not to pursue charges in relation to the case.
In a statement by the President's Office, President Solih assured the nation that he would do all in his power to ensure that all relevant authorities act without bias and influence when it comes to upholding the rights of the state and its people.
The Statement read that the constitution had afforded the independent rights to the Prosecutor General's Office and the Attorney General's Office to ensure that they fulfill their legal responsibilities free of political influence and bias.
It also said that as the head of the state, it is the President's responsibility to ensure that the constitution is upheld and that the rights of all the citizens are well protected by all means.
The rare statement from President's Office came as many aimed accusations at his administrations about attempts to cover-up the ventilator scam after the PG office had said that it would not pursue legal charges against any individual in relation to the case.
PG Office had said that there was no substantial evidence that would prove that any acts of corruption were committed during the transactions to buy ventilators to fight the on-going COVID-19 pandemic.
But the Anti-Corruption Commission had viewed the matter differently. The ACC had forwarded the names of 11 individuals that it believes were involved in the scam having labeled the scam as one of the biggest the ACC had investigated.
