President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih says Maldives Police Service would flourish with the newly implement Maldives Police Service Act that went into force today.
In a tweet, he congratulated all police officers who had re-taken their oaths of service as stipulated in the new law.
President Solih said that he hoped that with the new oath, the services provided by the Police would flourish and that the force is able to work closely with the people in the future.
Meanwhile, Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed said on Twitter that as the Police force renews its commitment to the public today to do better, it will work hard to shape the police service envisioned by this new and progressive Act.
President Solih had ratified the new Act in December of 2020.
The Act establishes the fundamental principles, guidelines, roles, and other aspects concerning police officers, aiming to streamline policing in the country by ensuring adherence to the constitution.
Under the Act, Police officers are mandated to ensure the safety of all members of the public, without any discrimination or influence, and in line with human rights best practices.
The Act also promotes professional standards within the police force and paves the way for the establishment of community-based policing services under a decentralized system of governance
