Health Protection Agency HPA has confirmed 162 new cases of COVID-19 in the Maldives on Thursday as the agency eases some of the restrictive measures it had taken in the capital Male'.

HPA said in its daily COVID update via Twitter that 99 cases were confirmed from the Greater Male' Area while a staggering 45 new cases were reported from inhabited islands across the country.

HPA also confirmed 15 cases from operational resorts while it reported two cases from safaris and 1 from an industrial island.

These cases take the total number of COVID-19 cases reported in the Maldives to 23,091.

HPA had said that 20,439 people have since recovered from the illness and that 2,579 people remained as active cases of the pandemic in the Maldives.

The agency added that 103 COVID-19 patients remained hospitalized for further treatment.

The global pandemic which was first reported in March 2020 have now killed 66 individuals in the Maldives and this includes 59 locals and 7 foreigners.

While the HPA had worked tirelessly to control the third wave of the pandemic by imposing restrictive measures in the capital Male' but yesterday had rescinded some of these measures. This includes opening up parks and public spaces in the Greater Male' Area for visitors as well as canceling the vehicle ban that had been in place in the area to minimize the movement of people.

HPA had said that although the vehicle ban had been removed, the 11:00 pm to 04:00 am curfew would remain in place in the Area.
