Health Protection Agency HPA reports 139 new cases of COVID-19 in the country on Wednesday as the third wave of the pandemic continues to grow stronger.
HPA said in its daily news update that out of the news cases, 89 were reported from the Greater Male' Area where strict measures to quell the pandemic remain in place for another week.
The Agency also said that 31 cases were reported from inhabited islands across the country while 19 cases were confirmed from operational resorts.
The new cases take the total cases reported since March 2020 to a staggering 22,929 in the Maldives with authorities now confirming 20,359 recoveries.
HPA said right now there are 2,497 active cases of the pandemic in the country while 103 COVID-19 patients remained hospitalized for further treatment.
The global pandemic has killed 66 in the Maldives since April of last year and this includes 59 locals and 7 foreigners. Most of the locals who had died from the pandemic were elderly individuals with underlying health conditions but some middle-aged individuals have also succumbed to the fast-spreading illness.
