Health Protection Agency HPA has placed Kaafu Atoll Dhiffushi under monitoring after two individuals who have recently traveled to Raa Atoll Ungoofaaru tested positive for COVID-19.

Speaking to "The Press" Vice President of Dhiffushi council Ibrahim Mubassiru said 30 people from the island are currently under quarantine because of their travel history to Ungoofaru, where authorities suspect a community spread of the COVID -19 pandemic has occurred, and that all 30 had been tested for COVID-19.

He said that only two tests returned positive results for COVID-19 while the other 28 individuals under quarantine tested negative for COVID-19.

Mubassiru also said that both the individuals had traveled to Ungoofaaru for medical purposes on the 3rd of this month and that they had returned to Dhiffushi the next day.

He further said that both individuals were from the same family and that they were a woman and a child but remained asymptomatic.

He confirmed that the island had been placed under monitoring until further notice.

Lhaviyani Naifaru

Earlier today, HPA had placed Lhaviyani Atoll Naifaru under monitoring after two individuals from the island had tested positive for COVID-19. Authorities had confirmed that one of the individuals who tested positive for the illness is a nurse who had recently traveled to Ungoofaru.

Officials have also said that the nurse had contacted many individuals after her return to Naifaru and that the island's hospital has now been shut down for contact tracing and further investigations.

Both the islands join a growing list of islands currently under monitoring across the Maldives. The 10-island list includes Noonu Lhohi, Raa Ungoofaaru, Lhaviyani Naifaru, Kaafu Huraa, Kaafu Dhifushi, Alifu Dhaalu Fenfushi, Alifu Alifu Thoddu, Faafu Nilandhoo, Dhaalu Kudahuvadhoo, and Dhaalu Meedhoo.
