Health Protection Agency HPA has confirmed another COVID-19 death in the country as the monthly pandemic death toll reaches four in March.

HPA said in a tweet earlier today that last night at 08:25 pm a 66-year-old male brought to IGMH/ER in an unresponsive state was declared dead at 08:45 pm.

HPA confirmed that this is the 66th COVID-19 death in the Maldives. This is also the second time this month that a person rushed to the IGMH/ER in an unresponsive state had succumbed to the pandemic.

The 66 people killed in the pandemic include 59 locals and 7 foreigners. Most of the locals who had died from the pandemic were elderly individuals with underlying health conditions. Although some middle-aged individuals have also died from the pandemic in the Maldives.

The foreigners who have been killed in the pandemic include 6 Bangladeshi citizens and a Filippino.

Today's death came as the country continues to fight-off the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic which public health officials have declared the worst one yet.

HPA had said earlier that it was concerned that despite a slight decrease in weekly positive cases, flu positivity & active surveillance positivity remain high.

It said that the country must be vigilant in its practice of safe behaviors, give proper contact information, and specifically avoid visiting family and friends and having gatherings.
