Health Protection Agency HPA has reported another 96 new cases of COVID-19 in the Maldives on Sunday.

This is the second day in a row that the daily cases had dropped below 100 after HPA had reported 94 new cases on Saturday.

HPA said today that the new cases include 75 new cases from the Greater Male' Area, 10 from inhabited islands, 10 from operational resorts, and 1 person from an industrial island.

The cases take the total number of COVID-19 cases reported in the Maldives since March of 2020 to a staggering 21,572.

HPA said that out of this 19,095 people have now recovered from the illness and that 2.406 people remained as active cases of COVID-19 across the country.

The Agency had also reported that the number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients has now dropped from 136 to 125 in the last 24 hours as the Maldives look to navigate through the third and worst COVID wave yet as described by health officials.

The global pandemic has killed 64 individuals here in the Maldives and this includes 57 locals and 7 foreigners.

HPA had also said that the confirmed cases include 7 deceased positives whose cause of death is not directly due to COVID-19.

Authorities have been taking extra precautionary measures to deter the third wave of the pandemic and this includes making it mandatory to wear facemasks while in public in all the islands across the country.

Also, authorities have tightened their measures in the Greater Male' Area where the infection appears to be rampant and this includes both a vehicle ban and a curfew currently in place to control the movement of people within the area.
