Police say it have now released all 25 arrested from the protests held by the opposition coalition yesterday.

It said that all 25 were released after being fined for disobeying the guidelines set by Health Protection Agency HPA to quell the on-going COVID-19 pandemic. In its latest restrictive measures, HPA had said that all public gatherings of more than 5 people are currently banned in the Greater Male' Area.

The Opposition Coalition had said that its acting leader Abdul Raheem Abdullah along with several council members were among those arrested from the protests yesterday.

Police had largely stopped the opposition protesters from gathering at the PPM Headquarter yesterday too as the police look to repeat its successful tactics from the weekend before last by closing all roads leading to the office.

The opposition had accused the government of closing down the PPM office since yesterday afternoon and had informed the party that administrative workers as well as officials preparing for the upcoming local council elections would also be barred from entering the office.

It had said that the opposition regarded this as a hindrance to its electoral work and that the government is working to influence the elections.

The opposition also aimed harsh criticism at the Elections Commission saying that if the commission failed to stop the government and its tactics, then the commission is also in league with the government and is working to benefit the local council candidates competing on behalf of the government.
