President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih says that his administration acknowledges that significant barriers remain in the quest to form equality between the genders in the country.
He made these comments in a tweet on the occasion of International Women's Day celebrated today.
President Solih said that women’s participation in every aspect of society is integral to the country's development.
He also said that the country is celebrating the tremendous leaps women have made for equality, and acknowledge that significant barriers still remain.
President Solih added that the government remains committed to systemic change for equality.
This year’s theme for the International Day, "Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world", celebrates the tremendous efforts by women and girls around the world in shaping a more equal future and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
In its message on the day, the United Nations said that International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change, and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women, who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.
It said that the world has made unprecedented advances, but that no country has achieved gender equality.
