The Chinese government has donated an additional 100,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

This was confirmed by both the Foreign Minister of Maldives Abdullah Shahid and the Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives Zhang Lizhong today following a meeting between the two at the foreign Ministry.

Minister Shahid said that the Ambassador had informed him that China will donate a further 100,000 vaccines to the Maldives, in addition to the 100,000 pledged already.

He thanked the Chinese government for its cooperation with the COVID-19 vaccination program.

In his tweet after the meeting, Ambassador Zhang said that China decided to donate the new batch of COVID vaccine to support the Maldivian government in its economic recovery.

He also said that this donation is part of China's promise to make vaccines public goods and for people-to-people friendship between the two nations.

China had donated 100,000 doses of the China-made COVID-19 last month while India have donated 200,000 doses of the covisheild vaccine manufacture by the country.

Authorities in the Maldives are currently vaccinating all above 18 years living in the Greater Male Area and vaccination continues in other parts of the country too.
