Health Protection Agency HPA has confirmed the 10th COVID-19 related death reported in the country this month.
HPA said in a tweet that earlier today at 05:06 am, a 62-year-old local man admitted in DH11 had passed away due to the pandemic.
HPA confirmed that this is the 62 COVID-19 death reported in the country since April of last year and the 10th death reported this month.
Yesterday, an 80-year-old local woman had succumbed to the fast-spreading COVID-19 global pandemic and she had been under treatment at Hulhumale Medical Facility, a center built to treat COVID-19 patients.
Out of the 62 individuals who had died from the illness in the Maldives 54 are locals while 7 foreigners have also succumbed to the pandemic here in the country.
HPA had said before that the number of COVID-19 deaths reported in the month of February has long surpassed the name of the COVID death reported in the previous two months combined.
Health officials have also said that the Maldives is currently fighting off the third and worst wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and that more cautionary measures need to be taken in order to prevent the illness from spiraling out of control and overwhelming the country's fragile healthcare system.
Health Minister Ahmed Naseem had warned last week that the COVID-19 situation in the Greater Male' Area was on the cusp of being out of control and that this could prompt another devastating lockdown in order to mitigate the effects of the pandemic.
HPA had reported 92 new cases of COVID-19 from the Greater Male' Area alone and said that a total of 118 new cases were reported across the nation yesterday.
This takes the total number of COVID-19 cases to a staggering 19,597 in the Maldives since the pandemic reached its shores in March of last year.
