Police say it has released all 30 arrested at the opposition rally yesterday amid accusation of suppression of rights against the current administration.
Police said out of the 30 arrested from the opposition protest, 27 were fined for disobeying Health Protection Agency HPA guidelines put in place to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.
It said that they were fined with an amount of MVR 1000 for disobeying HPA guidelines as set by the agency itself.
At yesterday's planned rally to protest against the government's handling of the Hiya Housing scheme, Police had arrested key opposition leaders including the acting leader of the opposition coalition and former MP Abdul Raheem Abdullah along with MP for Guraidhoo constituency Ghassan Maumoon.
The opposition had also said that members of the Police had closed down the opposition office while trying to disband the protesters.
In order to curb the COVID-19 pandemic, HPA had banned any public gatherings with more than 10 people while the government and police have said that they would not allow any protests in the current situation.
But without heeding this call, the opposition coalition had been organizing a series of protests that have attracted a number of their supporters.
