Health Protection Agency HPA confirms that 61 people have now succumbed to the COVID-19 pandemic in the Maldives.

This comes after HPA reported today that an 80-year-old local woman had died from the illness last night. HPA said that the woman had died while under treatment at the Hulhumale Medical Facility HMF.

With her death, a total of 9 people have now died from COVID-19 in the country this month alone.HPA had reported 6 COVID-19 deaths in the two months before February and had warned that this is a bad sign of how serious the COVID-19 situation in the country has now become.

The 61 individuals who died from the pandemic include 54 locals and 7 foreigners. Most of the locals who had succumbed to the pandemic here in the Maldives are elderly individuals with underlying health conditions.

Public Health authorities have confirmed that the Maldives is currently fighting the third and worst wave of COVID-19 infections and have been taking further restriction measures to deter the fast-spreading virus.

HPA had announced on Thursday that starting today, cafes and restaurants operating in the Greater Male' Area would only be allowed to serve dine-in customers till 8:00 pm. HPA had also said that such establishments can offer takeaway and delivery services till 10:30 pm.

HPA had previously imposed a vehicular ban and a curfew in the Greater Male' Area to curb the rampant pandemic.

The Agency had reported 133 new cases in the country yesterday out of which 117 were confirmed from the Greater Male' Area.

The COVID-19 total has now reached19,479 in the Maldives with 17,002 recoveries in the country.
