Health Protection Agency HPA says more than 4000 people have been vaccinated against COVID-19 here in the Maldives as the agency begins vaccination for more age groups in the Greater Male' Area.

In its daily update yesterday, HPA said that a total of 4269 individuals had been vaccinated since the authorities began the inoculation program on the 1st of this month.

HPA said that this includes 3573 individuals vaccinated in the Greater Male' Area and the 696 individuals vaccinated in the Atolls.

It added that vaccines are being administered in 6 vaccination centers in Greater Male' area and 7 vaccination centers in the Atolls.

Meanwhile, HPA had said today that it had began COVID vaccination for 55 years and above living in the Greater Male' region. It had begun inoculating the age group of 65 years and above living in the area on Thursday as authorities hope to achieve herd immunity to combat the fast-spreading pandemic.

On Thursday, authorities had begun vaccinating frontline tourism employees as well as teachers with officials looking to inoculate as much of the general population in the coming weeks.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had said before that the government aims to inoculate the whole population against COVID within the next six months and that the government is working to secure more vaccines for nationwide usage.
