President Ibrahim Mohamed has today delivered his 3rd annual address to the Parliament in which he highlighted key achievements and upcoming goals for the government this year.
In his address, President Solih highlighted the work done by the government as it faced the unprecedented challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. He said that the government directed all of its energy and resources into protecting Maldivian citizens from this virus.
He noted that some of the decisions taken to curb the illness like closing the country's border was not easy but taken as a necessary precaution to protect the citizens of the country.
President Solih highlighted that with all the timely measures taken by the authorities, the country was able to bounce back and start work to procure a vaccine for the COVID pandemic.
He said that the government had now secured a sufficient supply of vaccines and by now have kicked-off its vaccination program. In his address, President Solih urged the country to take this opportunity to get vaccinated in order to recover from the challenges posed by Covid-19, restart businesses, and permanently reopen schools.
In his address, President Solih said that it would take two years for the country to revive its economy after the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. President said that in order to recover as soon as possible, the Government has begun working on diversifying the economy and significantly boosting our economic activity.
He said that the Government aims to ensure that the benefits of tourism are felt across the country from North to South.
President Solih touched on key achievements from the social sector and said that are the counter-measures taken to keep extremism at bay.
He noted that the societal values of Islam emphasize kindness towards children, being helpful, and maintaining good relations with one another. He added that sexual abuse of children and women, depriving them of basic rights, and forming divisions within the community in the name of Islam will not be tolerated.
