Health Protection Agency HPA says more than 500 individuals were given the COVID-19 vaccine yesterday as authorities look to complete the first phase of the inoculation drive as soon as possible.

In a tweet, HPA said that 554 individuals were jabbed with the covisheild vaccine yesterday and a total of 880 individuals have now been vaccinated in the first two days of the inoculation program.

This includes 666 individuals vaccinated against the pandemic in the Male' Area as well as the 214 individuals given the vaccination in the atolls.

HPA also said that there are currently 6 vaccination centers in the Male' Area while two hospitals in the Atolls are also giving the vaccination.

Authorities have confirmed that COVID vaccination would begin at all the hospitals in the Maldives today as the country looks to fight off a third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Maldives had received 100,000 covisheid vaccines from neighboring India last month and yesterday authorities had confirmed that the Maldives had received 5000 doses of the Sinopharm COVID vaccine developed by China.

Officials said that the donation was made by a generous well-wisher but did not reveal the identity of the donor.

The government aims to inoculate the whole population against the COVID-19 pandemic within the next 6 months and have said that it is expecting more vaccine shipments in the coming weeks.
