Health Protection Agency HPA has ordered the closure of pre-schools, nurseries, and daycare centers in the Male' Area amid the dramatic rise in COVID-19 cases.

In a notice, HPA said that these places would be closed down until further notice to deter the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Upon the notice by HPA, universities in the Greater Male' Area have also been forced to cancel all physical classes and move their lessons online for the next two weeks.

But grade schools are expected to continue even with the rise in cases as well as with the new measures announced today.

This comes after a dramatic rise in COVID cases across the Maldives at the start of this year with 215 new cases reported yesterday in the country.

Health Protection Agency HPA had said that a total of 16056 COVID-19 cases have now been reported in the Maldives and that the number of active cases in the country has now moved up to 1807.

HPA also that 184 COVID-19 patients are currently hospitalized for further treatment and have previously warned that the current continuous trend of increased infections, would overwhelm the medical facilities in the country.

It also reminded this may result in negatively affecting both COVID-19 & non-COVID-19 healthcare.
