Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid says the Maldives has reinstated full diplomatic relations with Qatar.
This comes after Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies agreed on Tuesday to restore diplomatic relations with Qatar and restart flights to and from the country, ending a three-year boycott of the tiny gas-rich nation.
In a tweet, Foreign Minister Shahid said that the Maldives welcomes the positive developments following the annual summit of the Gulf Cooperation Council.
The Minister said that he had fruitful discussions with the Qatari authorities and that he was pleased to announce that the Government of Maldives decision to reinstate full diplomatic relations with Qatar.
Meanwhile, Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed said that he was pleased to see the Maldives resume diplomatic relations with Qatar.
He added that It’s good when Muslim nations resolve their differences and come together.
The Maldives established diplomatic relations with Qatar on 26th May 1984. But it had cut diplomatic ties with the Gulf nation in June of 2017 after its allies in the region severed ties with Qatar citing its involvement with terrorist organizations.
