The Maldives has welcomed its 500,000th visitor to the country this year as the island nation looks to bounce back from the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This comes days after the country welcomed its 100,000th visitor to the country since the Maldives reopened its doors for tourists on the 15th of July.

In a special ceremony held to welcome the 500,000th visitor into the country, authorities from the Tourism Ministry, Immigration, and Maldives Airports Company Limited MACL received the lucky recipient Kirsten as she arrived at Velaana International Airport.

She came to the Maldives from Germany.

Dubbed the 'Leading Destination of 2020', the Maldives has been welcoming a steady flow of tourists with all the parts of the country now opened for visitors.

Earlier this week, authorities allowed guesthouses in the Greater Male' Area to open for tourism under a designated guideline from the Health Protection Agency and as per the approval by the Tourism Ministry.

The latest data from the Ministry shows that up till the 16th of this month, the Ministry had given approval to 137 resorts to resume operations across the country. Meanwhile, it had allowed 163 guesthouses spanning several Atolls to reopen for tourists while in the Greater Male' Area of Male', Villimale and Hulhumale' 7 tourist guest houses have been allowed to open.

It had also green signaled 38 transit facilities to open their doors in the Greater Male' Area.
