Housing Development Corporation HDC says some of the Hiya Flat blocks were repainted due to a color fading issue.

This comes amid growing speculation that the current administration has been repainting the already colorful Hiya Flat blocks yellow.

In a series of tweets, HDC clarified that the external walls of the buildings were initially painted orange back in January 2020.

HDC said that due to the color fading issues of these blocks, the contractor was instructed to repaint the blocks identified with the color fading issue during their building rectification process.

HDC also said that as the contractor liability period is not over yet, these rectifications were borne by the contractor, without any additional costs incurred by the government.

Members of the opposition have been voicing concerns and discontent over the repainting of the Hiya Flats.

MP for Naifaru Constituency Ahmed Shiyam, who has been very vocal about the issue, had said that repainting the flats that were built under the leadership of former President Abdullah Yameen, does not mean that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had fulfilled his presidential pledge of providing housing to the masses.

Shiyam went onto say that the people do not want the government to change the color of the housing blocks but rather make quick arrangements so the rightful owners of the housing units can move in as soon as possible.
