Island Council of Alifu Alifu Ukulhas says a tourist guest staying on the island has tested positive for COVID-19.
Speaking to 'The Press', President of the Island Council Shaukath Ibrahim said a guest staying at the 'Nalaveli villa guesthouse' had tested positive for the illness today. He said that the guest tested positive after giving the sample for COVID-19 having finished holidaying on the island.
He added that local authorities were now making quarantine arrangements for the infected guest.
This is the third time a positive case was reported from the island after guesthouses in some parts of the country were allowed to reopen in mid-October. All three had been staying at the same guesthouse.
Health Protection Agency HPA said last night that 15 new cases of COVID-19 were reported from the country yesterday and that this has taken the total number of COVID-19 cases to 13,213.
HPA had said that a total of 12,437 people have since recovered from the illness and that 722 remained as active cases of COVID-19 in the country.
Authorities have confirmed that 47 people have succumbed to the illness here in the Maldives since April and that these include 40 locals and 7 foreigners.
