Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed says he prays that jailed ex-President Abdullah is freed from prison soon.

He made the comments while speaking at the parliament sitting today after MP for Naifaru Constituency has raised a point of order amid the debate on the committee report compiled on the Proposed State Budget.

Speaker Nasheed said he prayed that the ex-President is granted ease and freedom from the prison soon.

This comes after the opposition marked one year since the former President was jailed after he was convicted of money laundering in November 2019 and was given a 5-year jail sentence.

This weekend, the opposition took to the seas to protest his ‘unfair’ conviction and called on the current administration to free the former President from imprisonment.

Yameen’s legal team had appealed his jail sentence at the High Court and the court has since held the appeal hearings. He is currently awaiting the verdict for his appeal hearing.
